Men's Cross Country Matches Pre-Championship Billing With Fourth Place Finish

DES MOINES, Iowa - The men's cross country team matched its pre-championship billing as it finished tied for fourth place at the Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships Saturday. Northern Iowa (53) took the crown, followed by Drake (81) and Wichita State (95). SIU (100) tied with rival Illinois State. Sophomore Joe Byrne was the top runner for the Salukis finishing fifth overall in 24:34 - a personal best - to earn all-conference honors. Lone senior Doron Giat (24:55) finished 12th in last conference meet of his career, with freshman Diarmuid Grant (24:58) just three seconds behind in 13th place. Grant's time was also a personal best. Juniors Eli Baker and Tony LaChiana placed 33rd and 37th with a times of 25:26 and 25.34, respectively. LaChiana clocked in under 26 minutes for the third time this season to post a personal best.
SIU will return to action in two weeks at the NCAA Regionals on Nov. 15. Results can be found at www.SIUSalukis.com.
