Saluki Men's Cross Country Finishes Second At Crimson Classic :: Sophomore Joe Byrne and Junior Eli Baker Lead Dawgs Again

Tuscaloosa, Ala. - It's official. The Southern Illinois University men's cross country squad is a team to beat. The Salukis proved their abilities with a strong second place finish Friday night at the 16th annual Crimson Classic hosted by the University of Alabama.

Leading the way for SIU was sophomore Joe Byrne finishing in sixth place overall in 25:37.72. Junior Eli Baker showed that, along with his second place finish last week, he is a contender. Baker finished eighth in 25:56.32, while senior Doron Giat rounded out the Salukis' top three in 26:13.88 for an 11th place finish.

Freshman Diarmuid Grant, from Northern Ireland, grabbed 14th overall with a time of 26:25.56, while junior Tony LaChiana finished 28th in 27:01.28. Freshmen Hunter Sheldon and Kyle Monroe completed the Salukis' team of seven with times of 27:58.89 and 28:43.97, respectively.

The University of Alabama (41) took the Crimson Classic title by just 19 points to defeat SIU (60). The field was made up of sixteen teams, including Mississippi State (87), Samford (139) and Huntsvegas (163), which rounded out the top five teams.
