SIU Men Finish Second, Women Fifth At MVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Carbondale, Ill. - Southern Illinois University's men's team finished runner-up to Wichita State at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend. SIU's women's squad placed fifth. The Saluki men scored 102 points behind the Shockers' 152. UNI followed with 90. Indiana State was fourth (85), Illinois State fifth (72.5), SMS sixth (61.5), and Drake seventh (40.5). Freshman Felix Anderson paced the men's team winning both the 200m and 400m with career bests of 21.32 and 45.77. Anderson set a new track record with his 400m time breaking the old by .01 set by Chuck Wilson (unattached) in 1991. By a vote of the league coaches, Anderson was named Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year. Another freshman, Ray Scotten, was crowned champion of the pole vault clearing 17-6.5. Freshman Brent Little earned a third place finish in the long jump (23-11). B.J. Davis was third in the 400m improving upon his regional qualifying time (46.84). Seniors Kevin Mills and Marvin Primo were third and fourth in the 100m both running 10.79. Primo and Mills took third (21.50) and sixth (21.83) in the 200m. SIU's 4x400m relay was second (3:12.33) while the 4x100 was third (40.86). Julien Garcia finished fifth in the 1500m (3:53.22), and Eli Baker notched one point in the 5000m with his sixth place finish (14:51.72). Korto Dunbar was the highest female point earner of the meet with 26 points of SIU's collective 82. Dunbar won her specialty, the 100m-hurdles, in her best time of the year 13.58. She was runner-up in the 100m (11.91) and 200m (24.19). Noa Beilter won both the 800m and 1500m races. She crossed the finish line in 2:13.70 in the 800m and set a new track record in the 1500m running 4:30.47. Ty Davis was second in the 800m (2:13.93). Senior Latrice Gray tied for second in the high jump clearing (5-8.75). Danielle Lawary was runner-up in the shot put (45-7). Inna Turvesky placed fourth in the long jump (18-6) while freshman Megan Cenkush took fourth in the javelin (130-4). The 4x400m relay unit of Beilter, Davis, Dunbar, and Kelsey Toussaint finished sixth (3:49.44). SMS won the women's competition with 152 points. UNI was second with 102. Indiana State finished third (99), Wichita State fourth (85), SIU fifth (82), Illinois State sixth (57), Drake seventh (49), and Bradley eighth (25).
