CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois junior men's golfer Todd Obergoenner earned his second award for academic excellence Thursday after garnering CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team honors. Obergoenner, who was also named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, carries a 4.0 cumulative grade-point-average in university studies, and had a breakout season for the Salukis with a 75.4 stroke average, and tied for the team lead with five rounds in the 60's. The Cape Girardeau, Mo. native placed in the top five individually three times, top 10 five times, and top 20 in seven out of the season's 12 tournaments. He also put his name in the record book after firing the second-lowest 54-hole total in school history at 12-under-par 204, and tied for the lowest third-round score with a 5-under 67 in the last 18 holes at the ASU Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. Following the ASU Indian Classic, Obergoenner earned his first-career State Farm MVC Men's Golfer of the Week award, and first Prairie Farms MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor. He also helped lead the SIU men's golf team to a second place finish at the MVC Championship in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, which tied the program's best finish all-time. This is the first time that a Saluki men's golfer has been selected to the 10-member CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team, and Obergoenner will have his name forwarded on to the ballot for COSIDA / ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.
