Cross Country men take first, women second at EIU Panther Open

CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University cross country teams traveled to Charleston, Ill. for the EIU Panther Open Friday and came home with first place honors in the men's 8K race and second place in the women's 5K. The meet, which was held at Eastern Illinois University's Panther Trail, was the first meet of the season for SIU against other teams. The Salukis ran an intrasquad meet at the SIU Early Bird on Aug. 31. The men's team was dominant, placing six runners in the top 15, including the overall winner. Sophomore Jeff Schirmer led the way, posting a time of 25.12.41 in the 8K to take first place. Kyle Kirchner was the Salukis' next finisher with a time of 25:33.25, landing him in fifth place. Just behind Kirchner were Jason Ordway (25:38.16) and Dan Dunbar (25:39.13) finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Greg McBride (25:48.29) finished in 10th, followed closely by Mark Bowman (26:01.74) at 13th. Also competing for the Salukis were Tom Gentry (33rd, 27:05.05), Jason Brosseau (34th, 27:10.82) and Harley Richards (35th, 27:11.90). In the women's 5K Nefeteri Williams was SIU's top finisher, coming in fourth with a time of 18:23.86. SIU had six more runners finish in the top 25. A'Seret Dokubo (7th, 18:31.53), Emily Toennies (12th, 18:50.97), Megan Hoelscher (13th, 18:54.42), Toni Whitfield (16th, 19:09.00), Ryan Eichelberger (20th, 19:16.96) and Katie Rick (25th, 19:38.53). Also competing for SIU were Merry Lanker (29th, 19:54.87), Shanna MacLagan (33rd, 20:04.66), Amy Phegley (36th, 20:24.02) and Abby May (38th, 21:31.34) The Dawgs will be back in action as they host the Saluki Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. TEAM LEADERBOARD
