CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Southern Illinois University School of Law and Intercollegiate Athletics Department have joined to develop an opportunity for law students pursuing their juris doctor degree.

Saluki Athletics will provide an externship each academic year to a selected 2L or 3L student, who meets the externship requirements established by the School of Law.

"Over the last few years within most NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic compliance offices, a legal education is preferred or requires qualification," said Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance Christian Spears. "By working in partnership with the law school we are creating opportunities for future athletic administrators."

School of Law Clinic Director, Mary Rudasill, said the program is a good fit for those interested in sports law.

"For many years we've had students interested in athletics, and the externship program will allow them to learn about NCAA compliance up-close."

The externship is for academic credit only and no financial compensation will be provided.
